Can you get married at the courthouse in Greenville SC?

Often people ask if they can get married at the courthouse in Greenville, SC.  “In short, the answer is no.”

Per the Marriage License Division of the Greenville County Website: “Marriage ceremonies are not performed in the Probate Court office.”

The Marriage office of the Probate in Greenville requires that couples apply together for marriage licenses.

There is a 24-hour wait before they can be issued.  Couples, applying at 10:00 am on Monday morning, can have their licenses issued as early as Tuesday morning at 10:00 am.  However, if couples apply on Friday at 10:00 am, they will not have their licenses issued before Monday at 10:00 am.  This is because the Greenville County Court offices are closed Saturday and Sunday.

Upon issue of the licenses, couples can get married immediately if they have made arrangements with a wedding officiant.  However, they must contact an officiant because the court does not officiate marriage licenses.  They only issue them.
